Gray's Cabins

Dad met his brother Jim after the war to start up a cabin business just outside of Riding Mountain National Park.  That car that Dad bought in 1942 was used to haul logs out of the park to build some of the cabins.  {Hey they had a permit to do that!}  They bought the land, which already had a few cabins, from Sadie Gray’s father, Art Thompson.  Sadie was Jim’s wife.  And of course they called the business “Gray’s Cabins”.   Dad and Mom ran the business until 1987 when they sold and moved to Nanaimo.  They lived there for over 40 years.

House & Office

There were originally Cabins 1 to 9 on the south side of the property, going front to back and #10, 11 & 12 along the north side.  There was no #13.   #14 to 18 ran along the back going north to south.  #19 and 20 were on the top of the hill beside where the house and office was eventually built.  Later cabins 1 to 8 were joined together as they were pretty small.  So 1 & 2 became #1.  #3 & 4 became #2.  #5 & 6 became #3.  #7 & 8 became #4.  #9 became the laundry room for a while.  The central shower room for all the cabins was in the middle of the property beside the big back lawn.  It eventually became cabin #21 and was the largest of the cabins.
